How to Choose Hinges, Locks & Corners for Wooden Jewelry or Gift Boxes

Why the right hardware matters

A beautiful wooden box can feel heavy and 'finished' — or cheap and flimsy — largely because of the hardware on it. The hinge decides how smoothly the lid opens and how long it stays aligned. The lock or catch decides whether the box feels secure and how satisfying the 'click' of closing is. The corners protect edges and add the visual anchor. Choosing them deliberately makes your product feel premium.

1. The hinge: piano or butt?

Hinges do two jobs — they hold the lid in line and they let it open flat enough.

• Piano (continuous) hinges run the full width of the lid. They spread the load evenly, so the lid stays straight and does not sag even after years. They are ideal for long lids, jewellery chests and cases you open often.
• Butt / smaller hinges are fitted at the edge points. They suit lids that are light and rarely opened edge-to-edge, and give a cleaner look with less visible metal.

Key geometry to send us: the length and width of the leaves, the pin diameter, the fold you want (90° or 180°), and the thickness of the wood you are mounting into.

2. The closure: lock, hasp, magnetic or clasp

Think about how the box is opened and how much security it needs.

• Keyed locks and lockable hasps for valuables — jewellery boxes, deed boxes, keepsakes.
• Tumbler / push locks that click shut without a key, used on gift and cosmetic boxes.
• Magnetic closures hidden inside the rim — sleek, no visible lock, easy for the end user.
• Spring clasps and barrel bolts for a vintage, crafted look.

For a gift box you may want no visible lock at all and rely on a tight-fitting lid or a hidden magnet. For a keepsake box the ritual of opening a little brass lock is part of the appeal.

3. Corners and protectors

If the box is carried, shipped or handled a lot, metal corner protectors stop the most damage-prone point — the edge. They come in:

• L-shaped and 3-way (three-face) protectors for corners,
• edge strips for the sides,
• in plain, embossed or antique finishes.

Corners also give you the chance to add a brand or decorative motif cheaply, because the die is small and reusable.

4. Material and finish — matching the box

The finish is usually the first thing a customer notices.

• Brass / gold-tone suits warm woods (walnut, cherry) and light luxury packaging.
• Antique / bronze / dark finishes suit classic and vintage boxes; they hide fingerprints too.
• Steel / gunmetal gives a modern, minimal feel on darker boxes.
• Electro-plated or PVD surfaces are more durable than simple lacquer if the box is handled a lot.

5. Prototyping before quantity

Hardware is cheap in bulk but costly if you pick wrong. A drawing or a physical sample lets us confirm:

• the exact size that fits your routed recess,
• the feel of the action (how smoothly it opens, how firmly it stays shut),
• the finish under real light.

Most custom work starts with a first article or CNC sample we approve together before the run. That way you see the real part, not a rendering.

6. Ordering from a factory: what to send
